Your Player's First Practice

What to Expect -

Before, During, and After

A little preparation goes a long way.

We'll walk you through what happens at the rink so you can feel prepared and your player can focus on having fun.

LET'S GET YOU READY

Show up Early

Give yourself 30-45 minutes before practice to get ready without rushing.

Expect the Basics

Skating, drills, falling, pucks everywhere and lots of learning.

Let them Learn

Your player is building skills, confidence and a love for the game.

Be their Person

Your support after practice matters just as much as what happens on the ice.

Before You Leave Home

  • Gear & skates packed

  • Stick packed

  • Water Bottle filled

  • Skates ready for the ice

  • Rink address confirmed

  • Practice time confirmed

New and used skates may need sharpening before your player skates on them. Ask the hockey store if you're unsure.

When You Arrive at the Rink

1. Find the locker room

Look for your team's room assignment on the board/TV. Ask the front desk or another family. It's OK to ask!

2. Get your player dressed

It can feel like a puzzle at first. Ask for help if you need it.

3. Let your player settle in

A new environment can feel exciting, loud or make your player nervous. That's normal!

What Will Practice Look Like?

Probably not like a game,

Look for:

  • Skating Drills

  • Balance & edges

  • Falling & getting up

  • Stickhandling

  • Passing

  • Small area games

  • Stations & repetition

There may also be kids skating the wrong way, pucks everywhere and bathroom breaks.

That's beginner hockey!

What Should You Do?

Mostly? Let the coaches coach.

Watch for:

  • Effort

  • Trying

  • Getting back up

  • Small improvements

  • Listening

  • Helping teammates

  • Following directions

  • Trying new and hard things

Your job isn't to evaluate. Your job is to be their biggest fan.

Your Player Will Probably Fall. A LOT!

Hockey is one of the hardest sports to learn.

Falling is part of it.

Falling = Learning

Struggling = growing

They are learning something difficult.

That's a win!

What if Your Player Struggles?

They tried something difficult.

A simple response might be:

"That looked hard.

I love that you kept trying."

Then let them talk.

What You Say After Practice Matters

It's easy to ask:

  • "Did your score?"

  • "Did you do it right?"

Instead, start by noticing something:

"I saw how hard you worked."

Then listen.
