Hockey Skates Basics

What New Hockey Parents

Need to Know

Hockey Skates are the most important piece of equipment your player will wear.

When skates fit well and are properly sharpened, your player can focus on learning, not their feet.

Fit First. Comfort second. Cofindence follows.

FIRST: Hockey Skates Should Not Fit Like Regular Shoes

Hockey skate sizing is different from regular shoe sizing, and different brands can fit differently too.

Don't buy hockey skates based only on shoe size.

Have your player properly sized at a hockey store or sporting goods store.

What Should Hockey Skates Feel Like?

Secure - Your player should not feel like their foot is sliding around inside the skate.

Secure - Your player should not feel like their foot is sliding around inside the skate.

Comfortable - Snug does not mean painful. Your player should be able to focus on learning.

Supportive - The skate should help your player feel stable when standing and moving.

A Simple First-Practice Skate checklist

  • Skates were properly sized

  • They feel snug but not painful

  • Your player can stand comfortably

  • Nothing is rubbing or pinching badly

  • The laces are secure and not dragging on the ground

  • The skates have been sharpened

If something feels wrong before they get on the ice, fix it before practices starts.

New Skates May Not be Ready for the Ice

Surprisingly, new skates may still need to be sharpened.

Before the first practice, ask the store or rink: "Are these skates sharpened and ready for the ice?"

Are Used Hockey Skates OK?

YES!! Used skates can be a very practical option for growing kids.

And some kids like them more than new ones because they are already broken in!

Make sure the skates:

  • Fit properly

  • Have a supportive boot

  • Have blades in usable condition

  • Have no major structural damage

If Your Player is Struggling, Check the Skates First

  • "I can't stop."

  • "I keep slipping"

  • "My feet hurt"

  • "I feel wobbly"

Don't jump to "they need to try harder."

Ask: Could the skates be part of the problem?

Sometimes it's fit, sharpening, comfort, or blade condition.

Equipment can either help learning or make it harder.

Don't Overbuy Beginner Skates

Your player doesn't need:

  • Custom skates

  • The most expensive model

  • The same skates the best player wears

Your player need:

  • Safe skates

  • Proper fit

  • Functional blades

  • Comfort

  • Enough support to learn

What You Don't Need to Understand yet

Hollow depth

Inside vs Outside edges

Blade profiles

Advance sharpening

High-end skate technology

Note yet. Start with: Do they fit? Are they comfortable? Are they sharpened?
